What time is our Sunday morning worship service?
We gather in the Sanctuary upstairs at 10:00 a.m. Our service is from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., and sometimes runs to 11:15 a.m. if we have special additions to the service.
Which entrance should I use?
We have two entrances to the building. The main entrance is the double doors below the clock tower. The office entrance is also at the front of the building on the right-hand side directly off of the parking lot. Both entrances are open on Sundays from Easter through December 31st. From January 1st through Easter, the main entrance doors are closed to preserve heat.
What happens if I arrive late?
We lock each entrance at 10:05 each Sunday morning. If you are running late, please come to the office entrance, ring the doorbell located to the left of the door, and someone will come let you in.
Is your building handicap accessible?
Absolutely! Please use the office entrance off the parking lot. We have a small elevator which will allow you access to the upstairs sanctuary. We also have handicapped bathroom stalls for both men and women.
Are children welcome?
Always! We have children’s programming most Sundays during the school year. While we do not have a staffed nursery, we do have a quiet play area, including a bassinet, located at the rear of our Sanctuary where your little one can remain near you while you enjoy the service.
What should I wear to worship?
Anything you wish! Although you might occasionally spot someone in a tie or heels, you are more likely to see everything from jeans and a t-shirt to “smart casual” attire…and everything in between! So come as you are, and we promise you will fit in.
Will I be asked to stand and introduce myself on my first visit?
No, we realize that can be extremely uncomfortable for many folks. The pastor will ask the general question, “Is there anyone new in worship with us this morning?”, and if you choose to raise your hand, an usher will quietly bring you one of our New Visitor Welcome Bags. We promise we will not make you the center of attention at any time during your visit with us!
Do we serve communion?
We serve communion on the first Sunday of each month, and everyone is always welcome to receive it, or not, as they wish. For details about how we serve communion, please check out our In Person Worship page.
What happens after worship?
Snacks!! Coffee!! Conversation!! Join us in Fellowship Hall after worship and enjoy the opportunity to get to know some of our members. You will be welcomed at any table, and even for the introverted among us you will find you are instantly among friends.
Can I volunteer at activities even if I am not a member or don’t attend worship?
We encourage anyone to be involved in our community meals, our events, and any other activities! You do not have to be an official member to be part of our community, and no one is going to make you feel guilty if you never attend worship. We recognize that for many people, service IS their worship, and we always have room for those who feel called to serve in whatever ways work for them. Uncertain how you might get involved? Ask one of our pastors and they can clue you in on the many possibilities.
Do I have to volunteer for anything?
Though there are numerous opportunities to get involved, they are all voluntary and no one will pressure you to participate in any particular way. We feel that individuals serve best when they personally feel a connection to a particular ministry or project, and though you might be asked from time to time if you are interested in something, you always have the option of saying “yes”, “no”, or “maybe later”!
What if I am not sure I believe in God?
We’ll never ask!! However, we are here to answer any questions you might have, to help you explore who God might be to you, and to walk alongside you as you seek a connection with Something bigger than yourself. We have no tests and require no specific faith declarations. We recognize that every single human being forms their own unique connection with the Divine as they perceive it. We view our role at Athol Congregational Church to be your companions on whatever spiritual path you are on.
Am I expected to put money in the collection plate every Sunday?
There is no expectation, and only our Church Collector will ever know if you do or not. However, our staffing, our building maintenance, and every mission endeavor is fully funded by the congregation alone. We pass an offering plate every week, and people are invited to give as they are able or as they feel called.
